Principles

LEAP endeavors to build a process and community that actively questions, evaluates and responds to emerging challenges in the development of biotechnology

Training in biotechnology, and in science and technology more broadly, rarely teaches individuals practical skills to evaluate the impacts of their decisions on society, much less empower them to explore their concerns and guide them in working with others to alter the course of development.

As a program, we have adopted the following principles to help us enable a new generation of responsible leaders:

  • Processes not prescription: LEAP aims to develop critical process thinking and reflection, rather than prescribing rules and boundaries. We act as neutral mediators and create safe, inclusive, and collaborative environments for Fellows to grow, learn and thrive.
  • Leadership is not a limited resource: Many individuals have the potential to lead, but lack the skills, networks, and resources to help them succeed. LEAP aims to inspire and empower Fellows to question, evaluate, and lead the course of social and technical development.
  • Our program is our people: LEAP Fellows and Mentors are the backbone of our program and our most valuable asset. We are committed to helping Fellows grow both professionally and personally.
  • Quality over quantity: We believe in ensuring a quality experience for our Fellows and will prioritize quality over quantity in the design of the LEAP program.
  • Partner to scale: Cultivating leadership requires support across communities. We will build partnerships to support Fellows and scale the impact of the program.
  • Communities catalyze: We are committed to creating a hub that can foster a community to convene around important issues that impact the field and the world.
  • Diversity matters: We have a good deal to learn from other geographies, sectors, disciplines and interests. LEAP will convene diverse stakeholders and thought leaders to inform and influence visions for the field.
  • Leaders are learners: Needs change over time, especially in an emerging field. We believe that constant, active learning is essential, and will continue to evolve LEAP to meet the needs of an ever-changing field.

We anticipate these principles to evolve along with the program.
